Dr. Gupte heads the Medical Affairs Department of the Serum Institute of India Ltd., Pune. Beginning his career as a lecturer in the Preventive & Social Medicine Department, BJ Medical College, Pune during 1972, Dr. Gupte held several important positions with the Indian Council of Medical Research. He is the founder Director of ICMR National Institute of Epidemiology and ICMR School of Public Health, Chennai.
He established international course on “Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP)”, leading to post-graduate degree, Master of Applied Epidemiology and recognized by Medical Council of India and another course on Masters in Public Health. Dr. Gupte was responsible for developing several clinical trials for the ICMR initiative on traditional medicine.
Dr. Gupte is the first Chairman of the Technical Advisory Group for Elimination of Leprosy, WHO, Geneva responsible for developing strategies for leprosy elimination. He is a member of several national and international Committees, Advisory Groups, and Commissions.
